Guitar dating database
In the Harmony world, the interested buyer is often rarer than the guitar itself.- Usually you will find two stamps inside your Harmony guitar.
For example, on the photo below this guitar is without doubt a H22 (You can type a model number, with the H, on the search box on top of this page).
I believe the "F'" and "S" may have stood for first and second half of the year." Photo below : this H22 bass is from 1964 Photo below : this flat top guitar is from 1957.
Through much of the company`s history, Gretsch guitars were numbered sequentially and/or chronologically, so serial numbers (in addition to the features on the guitar) can give a very accurate idea of when the guitar was made.
Early (sequential) serial numbers Gretsch began numbering it`s guitars sequentially in 1939, beginning with the better models.
It looks like Harmony serial and date stamps were meant to manage the different parts and instruments on the production line, not to be used as reference by collectors 50 years later...
- My brother has a Harmony Meteor in great shape but the the serial number is 84H8448.
Second, remember that the specs on that particular guitar may have changed. It`s also worth noting that Gretsch used several different serial number systems through the years, and you need to make sure you`re looking at the right one.
This is particularly tricky in the mid `60s, when some serial numbers may belong to more than one numbering system.
